Prosotsani – Granitis – Ochiro – Kato Nevrokopi – Dasoto – Perithori – Pagoneri – Lake Nestos - Drama

Aft Prosotsani, set out for the mountainous region of Kato Nevrokopi, with its harsh winters (up to -20oC). Aft the junction for Volaka and the Ski resort, visit pictur- esque Granitis, 31km from Drama, built in the ravine of the same name amongst lush vegetation. In the old village you can see houses of traditional architecture and Taxiarches church (1873) with its wood carvings from the 19th century. The “cobbled streets” are paved with material from the old granite quarries. You reach Panagia chapel on a path cutting through thick vegetation. On 15 August, locals and emigrants from the area meet here. Granitis has a hostel and traditional small tavernas. In winter, you can buy mountain tea, honey and walnuts here.Continue toward Nevrokopi plateau. Your fi stop is Ochiro, 40km from Drama at Agios Georgios church (1882). The area is known for its famous line of strongholds in World War II and the heroic resistance of a few Greek soldiers against the German forces in April 1941. On the hill near the village of Ochiro, is the impregnable Lisse fortifiwith its labyrinthine underground passages, pill-boxes and small museum. On scheduled group vis- its, visitors can participate in a simulation of the Ochiro battle in a game called “follow the fox”. In Kato Nevrokopi (42km from Drama) at an altitude of 560m, you will fiAgios Dimitrios church (1866) with its impressive bell tower, frescoes and iconostasis icons (1870). The icon of Agios Dimitrios is stunning with its gold embroidered costumes. Aft Nevrokopi, you can continue NW towards Dasoto and the heroic Perithori, “Souli of Macedonia” or NE towards the traditional vil- lage of Pagoneri and the lake of River Nestos.
