Rating:
(0)

The site area is 44,623.98 hectares and encompasses the catchment area of The Byala River (the White River) in the furthermost south-eastern part of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains, next to the border with Greece. It includes the Byala River valley and the surrounding hills from Chernichevo village to the west, where the river crosses the eastern border. Vegetation in the area is very diverse and subjected to strong Mediterranean influence. Because of the thin human presence in this border region, forests of Moesian beech / Fagus sylvatica L. subsp. moesiaca / and forests of durman / Quercus dalechampii / have been preserved here. Widespread are the mixed oak forests of durman, virgiliana oak / Quercus virgiliana /, Italian oak / Quercus frainetto / and pubescens / Quercus pubescens /, mixed with hornbeam at places / Carpinus orientalis /.
Well represented in the region are the xerothermic bush communities of Mediterranean type with considerable species diversity. The river is relatively deep and its waters are not polluted. The Byala Reka area boasts with 167 bird species, 33 of which are included in the Bulgarian Red List (1985). 67 of the species are of European conservation concern (SPEC) (BirdLife International, 2004). As globally threatened in SPEC1 category are included two species, and as threatened in Europe in SPEC2 category - 22 species while in SPEC3 category are included 43 species. Byala Reka is of global significance as a representative area of the Mediterranean biome. There are nine biome restricted species in the country, five of which have found a habitat here.
Byala Reka provides a suitable habitat for 51 species listed in the Annex 2 of The Biological Diversity Act, which require special protection measures. Forty-six of them are also listed in the Annex I to Directive 79/409 of the EU and more than half of them have significant breeding populations here. The area provides a permanent place for rest and feeding of black vultures / Aegypius monachus /. Byala Reka is one of the most important places in the country with conservation significance at European level especially when it comes to the black vulture and black stork nesting here / Ciconia nigra / etc. Wood Lark / Lullula arborea / is presented in Byala Reka with significant levels of breeding population.
The fauna is represented by over a hundred species of butterflies, Rhodopean loach, snake-eyed lizard, true and marsh tortoises, olive- tree warbler, wolf, roe deer, bat species and other.
About 4% of Byala Reka is protected by law under the national conservation legislation. " Byala Reka Meandres" is a protected area that aims at the conservation of threatened bird species, including the Egyptian vulture and the golden eagle, as well as the preservation of the riverbank habitats. In 1998, a large part of Byala Reka was declared a CORINE area ( Coordinate Information on the Environment ) because of its European importance for rare and endangered habitats, plants animals and birds. In 1997, the area was declared an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.
