Thracian rock sanctuary fortress and necropolis of rock tombs - village of Kovil

Rating:
(0)

The tombs are carved into the rocks along the edge of the ridge, in the area of white stones (Ak Kaya), where the traces of a Thracian sanctuary were found. Their total number is nine, three of which are well preserved, four are almost destroyed and two haven’t been completed. The graves follow a line with a north-south orientation. There are no traces of burials. Cremations outside the tomb were practiced, the remains of which were either placed in urns along with the gifts or put right on the ground and then enclosed with stones.
Excavations unearthed many ornaments, fibulas, clay zoomorphic cult figures and plenty of ceramic material. The necropolis dates back to the 2nd century BC – 1st century AD.
