
The Chernata Skala protected site has an area of 893.70 ha. It was established with Order by the Ministry of the Environment and Water, on the suggestion of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, with the aim of preserving protected and endangered plants and animals and unique rock formationsIt includes rock complexes, mixed oak woods, shrubs and pastures. Here, a large number of species included in the national Red Book are to be found as well as such that are vulnerable on a European and world level, too. Of the plants, those are: mullein, pink bear"s tail, the Thracian thistle; of the amphibians, the European tree frogs; of the reptiles – the tortoises and the European legless lizard; of the birds, the Egyptian vulture, the long-legged buzzard, the Spanish wheatear, the big olive mocking-bird, the blue rock thrush. The protected site provides shelter to the otter, the spur-thighed tortoise and Hermann"s tortoise, all included in the World Red List.
