East Macedonia & Thrace

Maintained reserve "Zhenda"

Rating:
(0)

It is a black pine forest, remnant of the former rich vegetation, surrounded by a creeping oak forest, which extends outside the reserve. Only the pine trees in the reserve cover an area of 39.9 ha. The terrain of this forest is very diverse - from low to steep sloping, facing mainly to the east, northeast and partially southeast . The altitude varies from 700 to 850 meters. The soil is maroon with clay-sandy composition. The oldest trees cover an area of 100 acres. Today, their age is from 150 to 300 years and the largest trees have a height of 25 meters.
The natural tendency for self-renewal is evidenent by the presence of promising undergrowth. Younger black pine trees are usually stunted and therefore there is no undergrowth and self-seeders. Black pine trees are outstripping the poorly growing oak trees, which will result in their conquering the whole territory of the reserve and even to extending beyond its bounderies. The reserve is suitable for recreation and ecotourism.
