Dam "Studen Kladenets"

“Studen kladenets” dam is perhaps the most picturesque one in the Rhodope mountains. It meanders and forms beautiful bays. The shore is extremely picturesque and huge parts of it are pristine. Among the dams along the Arda River, it is second in size after Kardzhali dam.It starts at the east end of the town. The Monyak and Vishegrad fortresses rise on hills on both sides of the dam.
The dam is part of the energy cascade along the Arda River. This is the first dam built on the river. It was put into service in 1957. The wall was built about 30 km east of Kardzhali. Its catchment basin is 3752 km2 with an average annual discharge of 1600 million m3. The concrete dam wall is 68 meters high at its highest part, its length is 350 meters. The road from Krumovgrad to Haskovo passes on the wall. The foundation of the wall is 61 meters wide and the crown - 8 meters. The average width of the dam is 2 km and its depth - 40 meters.12 villages remained under the water. The water storage basin has a capacity of 489 million m3. The main purpose of the dam is the regulation of the large and highly variable seasonal flow of the Arda River.
The water is used for irrigation and electricity generation. On the right slope of the dam, about 800 meters from the wall, was built a hydroelectricity generator, which has an installed capacity of 60 megawatts per year and produces 153.1 million kWh electricity. The shores of this dam, as opposed to the "Kardzhali" ones are steep, bare hills, covered in places with bushes and single deciduous trees. Due to the extremely rough terrain and the rock material, afforestation is almost impossible.
On the bright side of it, the inaccessible hills are home to various rare and legally protected birds - vultures, eagles, falcons and more. The protected area “Golemiyat sipei” lies on its left shore– these are high, steep and jagged rocks. On the right of the wall starts an approach towards "Valchi Dol"reserve ,which is the only strict reserve within the district. After the dam wall, the Arda river has formed a deep, narrow gorge – the Devil"s Bridge (Sheitan Kiipriili). It is about a kilometer long. In the narrowest places, the rocky shores are almost vertical. The river’s width there is from 1 to 6 m and the depth up to 20 meters. Among all six gorges along the Arda River, this is the most impressive. In the region of “Shiroko Pole” village, where the dam is the widest, is the area for recreation and fishing. The next gulf, the one in Kaloyantsi village, is also one of the favorite places for fishing. There can be seen one of the largest dam islands, which a visitor can reach by boat.Mouflons were brought for breeding in the island about thirty years ago. Deer often swim to it. They come from Studen Kladenets hunting reserve, which occupies a large territory along the right shore of the dam, near Momchilgrad and Krumovgrad.
The dam with its large water surface and length provides an opportunity for water sports and fishing. There are also unique natural attractions such as the Abrasive wells and the Devil"s Bridge. The area around the dam has become the home of many waterfowl, some of which are under protection of the law on biodiversity. Such are the grebe, the heron, the saddleback, the black stork, the griffon vulture, the little bittern, the gray goose, the mute swan and more. In its narrowest part, it is like a deep river above which there is a rope bridge.
