Holy Monastery of the Dormition of Holy Mary in Maries
We have not written testimony for the first building of the Church of Holy Mary, in its current location, before 1813. Also, we do not know if this church was built as a simple chapel in the village of Maries in this position or if it was once a church dependesy which was later donated to the village. However, the certain thing is that in the west and north of this, within one to three kilometers, there were at least three monasteries of Mount Athos dependencies of Xiropotamos, Stavronikita and Karakalos. Today the whole space surrounding the dependencies together with the olive trees that once belonged to their respective monasteries of Athos, since 1932, has been acquired and held by residents of Maries and Limenaria. Today, apart from the main temple that is dedicated to the Dormition of the Holy Mary, there in a not integrated, at least the north side of the buildings of the monastery, which are the cells of the monks, the library and the beautiful church of Saint John the Baptist, and is indeed a right masterpiece. Still, there is a separate building to the right of the entrance of the monastery of Saint Panteleimon of Thasos with the leader Filothei, until they were temporatily housed in the monastery. At last, at the southeast side of the monastery, left of this entrance, in Christass of 1989 was completed, the erection of a wonderful room for the welcoming of the pilgrimages. The content update and upload of each region belongs to each partner which has also the copyright for those content. Any provision of the above conditions that becomes opposing to the law, it ceases to apply by right and is removed from the present, without the validity of the remaining conditions being affected in any case.
