The village Pythion is located 16 km northeast of Didymoteicho, next to the river Evros and in the Byzantine times was called Empythion. There it has been reserved almost intact one of the finest Byzantine architectural creations that was served as a resort of the Byzantine emperor Ioanni Katakousinos. Also, the train station of the village was an important focal point, as it was connecting the West with the East, and from there passed through the legendary Orient Express, on its route from Paris to Istanbul.
