Traditional fair in Kardzhali

According to elderly people, the fair in Kardzali was open immediately after the closure of Uzundzhovskia fair in 1876. When Kurdzhali became a district center, the fair turned into an annual trade event. It was held in the autumn and at the beginning it only lasted a week.Different goods were displayed and local producers had the chance to exhibit whatever they had. The fair was mostly visited for trade in livestock. Traditional Bulgarian food was sold at the fair as well. The fair gave impetus to trade. Manufacturers from across the country showed interest and began to come. Local artisans began to set up their own shops.  They sold fabric, yarn and thread. But most profitable turned out to be the trade with fine-cut tobacco , which today is among the main livelihoods of the rural population of the District. Along the fence of the mosque, when going westwards, along the gully, there used to be a whole range of small shops, where tobacco leaves were cut into long thin strands, perfect for rolling your own cigarette or smoking a pipe . There was a demand for fine-cut tobacco and selling it was relatively expensive. There were artisians who would roll up a cigarette with great skill and speed. Whole caravans of 30 to 40 mules set off from Kardzhali to sell tobacco elsewhere. They passed through villages and towns in western and eastern Thrace.
