According to the ancient Thracians who once inhabited our lands, the Rhodope Mountains used to be a girl famous for her beauty and worshiped and admired by the gods. They secretly hoped to capture the beauty. Everyone dreamed of her becoming his wife. God Hemus was especially jealous of the girl and threw very large stones to hide her from the other gods and to preserve her beauty (The Plovdiv hills are said to have shaped from these stones). And since he could not keep her to himself, God Hemus petrified the splendid beauty, and she became the Rhodope Mountains. The most famous singer, Orpheus, lived and sang in the mountain. His songs echoed in the snowy slopes of the Rhodope Mountains and fascinated birds, animals, and even reptiles.
Something very strange happened once. Orpheus wandered all day in the mountains and sat on a peak to rest and admire the beautiful view which revealed in front of his eyes. Being fully enamoured of the beauty of the mountains,he did not notice how a three-head snake-monster came out of a gaping rock. Once it saw the dreaming Orpheus, the snake dragged itself to him and stuck its poisonous tongue out. Stones started rolling and awoke Orpheus. He looked at the snake with horror and realized that this was his end - there was nowhere to escape, because only rocks fenced the place where he sat. Stiff with fear, he started singing as a last resort.
The song was so beautiful that the serpent stepped back and listened. Orpheus continued to sing a song after song thus making the snake to stay still and listen. People say he sang three days and nights in a row without stopping. The snake-monster, enthralled by the song, slowly retracted its poisonous tongues. It then closed its mouth and streched on the ground to listen. And as it listened, it fell fast asleep on the third night. When Orpheus noticed that the snake was asleep,he jumped and rushed nimbly down the slopes of the Rhodope Mountains. No one ever knew where he went afterwards, where he lived and sang. But Rhodopeans have kept the memory of his devine melodies alive. So, whoever wants to know more about the songs of Orpheus, let him go to the Rhodope Mountains and listen to the wonderful songs of Rhodopean people. Along with the songs, one can also hear other stories about the mountain and Orpheus.
