Olan Kaya is one of the most impressive rhodopean rock formations. Hidden in the recesses of the mountain, below the Eastern-rhodopean village of Murga, at some 10 km distant country road, most of it dug out due to the floods, and really difficult to cross even with large cruisers. Olan Kaya is located near a water fountain along a field, near the influx of the rivers Karaman dere and Kokez dere, before flowing into Borovitsa River. Apart from Murga village, the site can be reached for about 3-4 hours from Borovitsa dam lake, along the riverbank of Borovitsa, upstream of the so called “Level 0”, although this route is much longer and tiresome than through the villages of Yonchovo and Murga.
A deserted hunting lodge is situated nearby that can be used as a shelter in some bad weather.
Olan Kaya is almost 40 meters high, and from afar looks like a baseball bat stuck in the ground with its thin part, along the steep slopes of a deep gully.
At first, only the tip of “the bat” is visible, but with every next step forward it is revealing more and more. Gradually before one’s eyes a stone rocket emerges, heading frighteningly towards the sky, and looking differently from all its sides.
On the opposite side of Karaman dere, black storks build their large nest every year.
Native people say that Olan Kaya in Turkish means “The Child” rock or “The coming into the world rock”, because it reveals itself gradually in the recent decades as a result of the talus landslide.
