There is a tomb cut into hard rocks above the right bank of the Arda River. Its entrance is 4 m above the surrounding terrain. 13 rock niches were hewn around it.In shape and layout, this tomb differs from all the rest known so far in the Eastern Rhodopes. The internal space is separated into niches, grooves and furrows, some of which have probably appeared later. It might have been carved in the Middle Ages and used by Scythian monks , as shown by its name.
The legend about priest Martin has it that on Peter’s day the most important leaders of revolutionary groups gathered and joined their people and stated a heavy oath of allegiance: to accumulate great wealth, then to hire an army and to free Bulgaria from the Turkish foe.The leader became Valchan but his right hand and brain was the knowledgeable priest Martin. One spring in Strandzha Mountain, the revolutionary group captured five Italian professors, seven Albanian stonemasons and twenty Turkish scholars and officers. In their baggage train they found maps and lists of Roman mines, caves and fortresses, in which were hidden treasures. The deal between the expedition and the Sultan was the following: they had to dig up the treasures and then divide it in half. For seven years the revolutionaries and their people carried along the scholars and opened caves, mines and fortresses. They destroyed the Roman signs, and the Albainian stonemasons carved the revolutionary signs on their places. For many years no treasure chest could go from Vienna to Istanbul. When the task was completed, they killed all the witnesses of their secret work, and then for ten years carried the treasures to caves and holes around the mountain
Once this was completed, they sent their people to the Russian Tsar to recruit troops, and promised him a turban of coins for the soldiers and double for the chief heads. The revolutionaries led the envoys of the king blindfolded throughout Bulgaria and showed them their treasures. They had them enter the "Common Maara” and the Russians remained dumbfounded and told the king that the revolutionaries had gold to pay for a large army. Just then, however, war broke out and the deal fell through. There was a betrayal among the revolutionaries and Valchan gave up leadership and quit. When the brigand disbanded, priest Martin, who had hidden all the treasures, made sure none of Valchan’s assistants stayed live.
Locals say that a letter dated back to June 12th, 1758 and signed by Martin and Valchan, is passed from hand to hand. The description of the cave and the hidden treasures are in it.
