Several mills from the end of the 19th century operated until recently along the creek in Shumatitsa village. There is only one in operation now. Locals call it the Pehlivanska mill, because it is located in the Pehlivanska neighborhood. It was built more than 200 years ago but has preserved its grinding facilities as well as its original design. It is of the karadzheika type, one of the few surviving in Bulgaria in the 21st century. The name of the mill is associated with the dark colour of the flour coming out of it. It derives from the Turkish word “ kara”, which means black. A little further down the river there is a second mill but it is no longer in use and part of it is dilapidated. Both are declared monuments of culture.
