Rock Window "Wind Stone" near the village of Vodenicharsko

Rating:
(0)

It is a rock tomb that very much resembles a rock window. It is located about 200 meters east of the "Mal Ezer" fortress in direction to the nearby Asar Dere.
Locals believe in the healing powers of the place and visit it often with the hope it would bring them health and inner nourishment. It is mostly visited at the night of May 5th, which is the night before St. George’s Day. The ritual is as follows: one passes through the hole three times and then ties a piece of clothing on the surrounding bushes and trees. This is a kind of ritual "payment", a kind of thank you gift .Small coins are left in the crevices of the rock at the very entrance of the tomb as well. The next stage of the cleansing ritual represents a descent to Azar Dere and rinsing off with water. A small bowl can be used to get some of this water and sprinkle family and pets for health.
It is a common belief that, until the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century, every house, garden, tree and spring had its own Master, disguised as a harmless snake or some other animal. This belief is widespread in the Rhodopes. According to it, on May 6th the healing power of the Wind Stone increases with the rise and daily activities of the Master.
